Update: Tethering with the ATEM Mini

With the latest update 8.6 for all ATEM Mini models, it is possible to stream your live event over the internet through Tethering. Tethering (connecting to the internet by means of a mobile phone with 4G or 5G) was already possible with the new 8-channel ATEM Mini Extreme and Extreme ISO. The ATEM Mini in stock. The ATEM Mini makes it easy to live stream professional multi-camera productions to YouTube, for example. Simply connect the ATEM Mini and switch live between four high-quality video camera signals.

Connect a computer to add PowerPoint presentations or the image from a Game Console. UPDATE: Audio delay

There may be a delay between the analog audio signal from the two microphone inputs and the picture from the HDMI inputs. This delay can be up to a few frames. The latest software v8.2.3. update for the ATEM mini and Mini Pro firmware allows the audio inputs to be delayed up to 8 frames in order to synchronize with the HDMI inputs.

ATEM Software Control Panel

The ATEM Mini Pro has considerably more functionality than achievable with the front panel. The ATEM Software Control Panel is an app for Windows or Mac OS that makes all the functions of the ATEM Mini Pro available. The computer with the ATEM Software Control Panel can be connected via USB or Ethernet. The latter makes it possible that several users can access the ATEM Mini Pro simultaneously to, for example, load graphics of, for example, results of elections or a competition. Via a plug-in, graphics can be loaded directly from PhotoShop without first having to save them to the hard drive of the PC.

Cameras

The ATEM Mini Pro lets you connect a total of four HDMI cameras with a resolution of up to 1920×1080 in 60 frames interlaced or progressive. HDMI cameras generally have significantly better quality than standard webcams due to better sensors and interchangeable lenses. Almost all cameras have HDMI output except very professional ones with an SDI output. That signal can be easily converted with, for example, the Blackmagic Micro Converter.

The connected cameras do not necessarily have to run in the same resolution. All inputs are synchronized and converted to the same preset output resolution of up to 1920 × 1080 60p.

The latest Blackmagic firmware Pocket Cinema Camera 4K en Pocket Cinema Camera 6K makes it possible to control it from the ATEM Mini Pro. This makes it possible to remotely control the lift, gain and gamma of the camera as well as the iris, focus and, depending on the type of lens, the zoom.

Audio

In addition to the four HDMI inputs, the ATEM Mini has two 3.5mm stereo microphone inputs. For example, a standard microphone, lavelier (tie clip microphone) etc. can be connected to this. Extremely useful for interviews, for example. Via the ATEM Software control, the four camera stereo and the two stereo microphone inputs, total 12 channels, can be mixed with the built-in Fairlight sound mixer with 6-channel parametric EQ, Compressor and Limiter.

Cabling

The ATEM Mini works with only HDMI cables. Both from the inputs to the ATEM and from the output to its HDMI. HDMI cables are not suitable for longer distances. Blackmagic Design itself does not recommend longer than 10 meters. Blackmagic Cinema Cameras (both 4K and 6K) can be controlled from the ATEM Mini. For this it is necessary that the HDMI cable has an ethernet connection.

Socrates offers two three cable lengths which have been tested for ATEM Mini in combination with the controllable Blackmagic Cinema Cameras.

When using another type of camera such as camcorders or DSLR with HDMI output, it may have the smaller HDMI mini or HDMI micro connection. For this, an HDMI mini / micro to HDMI female is available to connect with a normal HDMI cable.

CAUTION: Many HDMI connectors on cameras are mounted on the camera's PCB. The weight or pulling on the cable can create an excessive load. This can cause the print connection to fail. It is therefore advisable to support the cable or to use a so-called HDMI protector.

TIP: Blackmagic Video Assist 5 ″ 12G

An extremely useful tool for the ATEM Mini is the Blackmagic Video Assist 5 ″ 12 G. This can be placed on a small table tripod, such as the Manfrotto Pixi Mini, next to the switcher as a viewing monitor. An additional advantage is that Blackmagic Video Assist can also record the signal. For a slightly larger model you can opt for the 7 ”.

ATEM Mini vs Mini Pro

The ATEM Mini has the same form factor as the ATEM Mini Pro but has three fewer functions. The Pro version can record the live signal on a USB memory such as the Samsung T5 1TB SSD disk. Live streaming can be done via the webcam USB port as well as via the Ethernet, which results in better quality. Finally, the HDMI output can switch between Program (PGM) like on the ATEM Mini, show one of the HDMI inputs or act as a MultiView. The MultiView shows the four HDMI inputs, Preview, Program, status indicators for recording and streaming and the six channel Fairlight sound mixer. The Pro version costs more than twice as much.
